As a seven year old child Catriona Ferguson was exiled from her beloved Scottish highlands by her grandfather and chief of her clan, Angus Ferguson. Fifteen years pass and it is now 1736 and Catriona is living in Edinburgh with her servant woman Elspeth. Catriona is shocked when she receives a summons from Angus to return to the Highlands as heir to the clan. Catriona is both suprised and angry. After all, it was Angus who cast Catriona and her parents out of the Highlands in the first place. Catriona discovers that she has been betrothed to Lachlan MacLean, a hated clan chief. Robert MacLean, cousin of Lachlan, has been assigned the task of escorting Catriona on the dangerous journey to the Highlands. In exchange for escorting Catriona to the Highlands, Robert will be allowed to marry the beautiful Sarah Kendrick and avoid service as a clergyman. When Catriona first lays eyes on Robert she is struck by his blonde, blue eyed good looks. Robert is mesmerized by the fiery redhead.
