Linger Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Linger

Sam Roth is a werewolf that has the responsibility of taking care of his newly assigned pack but has to navigate his emotions for one of them while finding a permanent cure from werewolf-ism for all of them. Sam Roth is an 18 year old werewolf who has just inherited the pack but has to navigate through love and the urge to be re-infected while also evaluating finding a cure for everyone. Sam was once able to change but after an infection of bacterial meningitis it seems his ability to change as a werewolf was gone. His girlfriend Grace is even stranger because she was bitten as a child but was never able to change. Beck was the former leader of the pack and had raised Sam from childhood but since he was not able to take human form at all, the reins went to Sam.

Beck thought that Sam would be operating in wolf form most of the time and as such created other werewolves to fill the pack and these include unlikely characters Cole and Victor. Cole was a singer that had gotten himself into drugs and loose women, and when the idea of being a werewolf was introduced to him, he jumped at the chance, thinking it was a way out of his empty life. Because he wanted to go through with the experience with someone else to give himself justification for the act, he convinced his bet friend and other band member Victor, to go through the change with him. Victor agreed but the life was evidently not for him but Cole kept ignoring the signs. It is only when Victor died after being shot is when he realized the depths of his selfishness. He also surmised that his extended drug use is why he was not able to remain as a wolf for long.

Cole started to become closer to Sam, Grace and Isabel, who had a brother that died trying to get a cure for being a wolf. Grace's parents come to learn that the relationship between Sam and Grace is sexual and ban Grace from ever seeing Sam. At this point, Grace runs away to Sam's place where they have to figure out things because Grace apparently does not have much time to live. Cole being a scientist's son is coerced by Isabel to find a solution fast and he comes up with an idea that Grace has to change into a wolf or she will die just as the wolves that cannot change to humans do not also have much time left. Cole then bites Grace and she changes on the spot. Now Sam is left with a dilemma to go through the same thing and become a true werewolf again or to look for a universal and permanent cure for werewolf-ism for his friends.
Best part of story, including ending: I like the story because it focuses on the lives of werewolves who are magical creatures but have normal, human day to day problems and emotions to sort through.

Best scene in story: I like the scene in chapter 19 where Sam the leader of the werewolves finds Cole in a compromising position inside a tent trying to change into a wolf. Sam reminds himself that the previous leader and his mentor Beck, chose Cole for a reason. This is the only reason that Sam uses not to hate Cole, which is quite humorous.

Opinion about the main character: I like that the main character, Sam is able to take the responsibility of the pack with ease when it is delegated by the leader Beck, because he no longer can, even though Sam is quite young for the position.
