After her identity is revealed to the kingdom by her archnemsis, Roger of Conte, she goes out of the capital and begins searchng for adventures. Alanna then meets a sorcerer who gives her a map that set a "path to her destiny". The map contained information to the Roof of the World in order to get the Dominion Jewel that, in the right hands, can bring prosperity to the land, or can bring total destruction to evil hands. Alanna then decides to get the Dominion Jewel for the glory of her kingdom of Tortall. She has many stops on the way, including meeting a beautiful exiled princess, a Shang warrior, and an elemental.
