The Dorrit family, William and his three children live in the Marshalsea, a debtor's prison. The youngest Amy, Little Dorrit was born in the prison. All three children are allowed to work outside and return at night to be with their father. Little Dorrit does sewing for Mrs. Clemens and when her son, Arthur returns from India, he helps get Dorrit freed from prison.

When the family suddenly comes into money, all of them except Little Dorrit become obnoxious and snobbish. She falls in love with the older Arthur. When he is eventually imprisoned in the Marshalsea, she helps him and they marry in the prison church.
