Henrietta Rolland is a young lady whose brother was killed at Waterloo and whose death she blames on Jason Cavander, marquess of Oberlin. He father obsessed with his duties in the House of Lords and the corn laws. He is an ultra conservative to his toes and ignores most of what Henrietta does. What Henrietta does is dress up as a young nobleman from Scotland and goes in search of Jason Cavander. She has learned how to duel from an older brother and as a young man is taking fencing lessons. She makes friends one evening and they take her all over town to places a young lady would never think of going to including a brothel. Ome of her friends older brother gets her a membership to White's a gentlemen's club. The older brother is best friend of Jason's. At the club one evening she begins to taunt Cavander, trying to force him to challenge her to a duel. He does not take the bait so she does other things to annoy him including trying to seduce his mistress.

Jason is a man of a secret past. He is a widower. His secret involves Henrietta's brother. He finally is finally forced into a duel one evening when Lord Harry challenges him. As the challenged he chooses to fight with swords. Lord Harry is stunned as this is his weakest skill. Lord Harry has a lot of spirit and with revenge on her mind she refuses to give up even though she is seriously wounded. Jason realizes that he has just fought a duel with a woman and takes her to his country estate to nurse he back to health. As she regains her health she speaks to Jason of her brother and learns that he had nothing to do with the death. Several days after the duel she returns to London to her father. Jason and Henrietta realize that they are in love.Together they join forces to find out who sent her brother to the front lines of the war only to find that her father had a lot to do with his son's death and his reasons were strictly political.
