Fermia Daza is a beautiful and haughty young woman. Despite her lack of family name, her father hopes that she will marry well. However, a young telegraph operator named Florentino Ariza falls in love with Fermia and pursues her. More out of curiosity than anything else, she accepts his advances and soon the couple are secretly engaged. When Fermia's father finds out, he is furious and tries to keep the lovers apart, with no success. As Fermia grows older, however, she realizes that she does not love Florentino and breaks off the engagement, leaving Florentino in despair.

Fermia marries the doctor Juvenal Urbino. He is wealthy and from a good family, so that Fermia's father is thrilled. Fermia loves her husband but at times finds their long life together troubling and problematic, especially because of her husband's mother and sisters. Florentino, however, continues to pine for Fermia and never marries, even though he has numerous affairs. With time, he grows wealthy and known through his business ventures. When Fermia's husband dies, she is genuinely grieved. For Florentino, though, the event gives him the chance to hope that he can win Fermia back.
