A Love Of My Own Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of A Love Of My Own

Zola Norwood is an up and coming editor at an African American magazine. When Zola meets media mogul Davis McClinton on board an airplane flight, Zola's life takes an unexpected turn. After Davis has Zola's seat upgraded to first class so that she can sit next to him, the two end up talking about Zola's dreams of starting her own magazine, Urban Soul. By the end of the flight, Davis has convinced Zola to come work for him and start up his new magazine, Bling Bling. Although Zola realizes that she won't have total control of this new enterprise, she decides that refusing Davis' offer would be tantamount to stupidity. Almost immediately, the lines become blurred when Zola and Davis enter into an affair. Making matters worse, Davis is very much a married man. In her pursuit of happiness, Zola decides that she cannot limit herself to just one man. Since Davis is married and has no intentions of leaving his wife, Zola takes up with another man to satisfy her sexual needs. Jabar is a handsome, well-built and highly sexual african american man that Zola meets with on Monday nights. Despite the presence of Davis and Jabar in her life, Zola still yearns to find the love of her life. Attorney Raymond Tyler Jr. has come on board Bling Bling magazine as the CEO. Raymond is a gay African American male who has just ended a long-term relationship with his lover Trent after discovering that Trent impregnated his female co-worker. Still reeling from the betrayal, Raymond is trying to make sense of his world and rebuild his life. When Raymond's friend John Basil Henderson reenters Raymond's life, Raymond discovers that Basil's life is once again filled with turmoil. Basil, who is a homosexual on the down low, has a baby daughter that he is trying to find. After Basil's girlfriend Rosa discovered Basil's secret gay life she took his child and vowed to never let Basil be a part of his child's life due to his lifestyle. As Raymond works to help Basil find his daughter, an attraction builds between the two friends. When a sudden tragedy strikes Raymond, he is forced to summon all of his strength to survive the ordeal.
