Love's Sound In Silence Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Love's Sound In Silence

Midge begins to fall in love with her arrogant, authoritative, handsome boss Brian, but does he only feel lust for her? Midge will find out as their courtship unfolds, if she can help him escape the prolbems of his past and his fears of commitment. Midge is hired as a copywriter by Brian, a wealthy publisher from an old and powerful Dutch New York family and owner of The New York Age, an old and venerable broadsheet in the city. To Midge, a small-town Midwestern girl with relatively unsophisticated ways despite her sharp brain and good looks, Brian is intimidatingly aristocratic, wealthy, and suave. Midge's job is a temporary contract, but she dreams of writing for The New York Age and hopes to turn the temporary job into a full-time position - she had not expected to be so overwhelmed and attracted to Brian, however.

Brian is an expert seducer and makes it clear that he is attracted to Midge. He toys with her and plays her like a master playing a violin, and seems intrigued by her innocence and naivete, which are not qualities that he often sees among the sophisticated New York women he typically amuses himself with. Their flirtations grow bolder and all the stolen kisses evoke feelings that Midge has never experienced before, and she becomes attached to Brian and yearns to know him better. But he has built a wall around himself and normally she would be too intimidated to penetrate it. But living in New York and knowing that such a powerful man is interested in her gives Midge confidence, and she sees that her new confidence attracts more and more men to her, which makes Brian somewhat possessive and makes Midge realize that she probably has the capability to pry Brian's walls apart. She begins to steer their encounters towards deep conversation rather than sexually charged moments, and Brian begins to close up.

But Midge persists, and begins to make his life easier in other ways- running his office more smoothly, tactfully steering away an odious aunt of his when she insists on seeing Brian, and stoically shouldering Brian's pain when his dog dies of old age, which is actually kind of a touching moment. Brian begins to see that this girl is different from the others, and comes to trust her. His hidden pain becomes exposed when Brian takes his office - including Midge - to a weekend on his estate at the Hamptons, and Midge sees the full extent of his family's dysfunction and emotionally detachment from each other. So when Midge's parents come to visit her in New York, she asks Brian to come and have dinner with them, and Brian is full of wonder at how close Midge and her parents are. He falls in love with and tells her that he is sorry she is going to be married to such a messed up person, but he needs her in his life and he intends to marry her whether she likes it or not. Midge laughingly accepts.
Best part of story, including ending: I liked the exploration of Brian's fears and pains, it was realistic.

Best scene in story: I liked the scene in which Brian and Midge have a cozy and un-fancy dinner with Midge's parents and Brian becomes a different person - warmer, nicer and more genuine.

Opinion about the main character: I liked that Midge did not let go of her wholesome and old-fashioned values. I also liked how preppy and WASPy Brian was.
