Mary Potter is a new teacher at Ruth, Wyoming. She is puzzled that one of her students, Joe Mackenzie, is dropping out of school. She decides to talk to his father and on the way to their house, she experiences hypothermia because she wears the wrong clothes. She is suddenly rescued by Wolf Mackenzie whom she suddenly feels attracted to.

Ex-convict Wolf Mackenzie is a ranchman quietly living in the mountains with his son. Although innocent, his history of rape charge makes the townpeople wary of him and it is further aggravated by his American Indian heritage. So when Mary suddenly appears in his home, he is surprised that she shows no disdain for him. He is instantly attracted to her but she is determined that she keeps their relationship purely business as she is intent to convince Joe to go back to school and fulfill his dreams. Because of her high hopes for Joe, she decides to tutor him with his subjects thus making her spend time with Wolf frequently.
When the town is suddenly struck by a serial rapist, everyone is alarmed. The townpeople quickly points out that Wolf is the perpetrator. Mary is disgusted by the townsmen's ostracization against Wolf and she defends him to them and champions him. But the people won't believe her until she herself gets attacked by the rapist but somehow is only bruised but unharmed. Wolf is furious that Mary has faced the danger. He brings Mary to his house to see over her and protect her if ever the rapist returns for her. He also quietly on his own search for the rapist.
While Mary is visiting one of the victims, she is suddenly grabbed by the rapist. Wolf having heard that the rapist has Mary rushes in to save her before it's too late.
