Florence Washburn is going to marry Kit Swinton by proxy since he is overseas and she is in London. The proxy for the groom is Kit's older brother, Thomas. But when it comes time to sign the marriage papers, Thomas refuses to wear his glasses and signs in the wrong place. He and Florrie are married. They are horrified. They disliked each other since Florrie was a child tagging along behind Thomas and Kit.

Thomas and Florrie are sent to a remote rural area of Devon to wait until an annulment can be obtained and through what they think is a mistake, but planned by their families, they end up on the same estate together. While there, they begin to torment each other much like Kate and Petrucchio in Taming of the Shrew. But as they plot against each other, they begin to learn more and more that they are well suited and perhaps, they have no reason for dislike but reason to stay married.
