Christine Millman and Herman Lewis are widowers in their sixites. Before the deaths of their spouses, the couples had been friends. She is Catholic, but had been married to a Jew. He is Jewish. She is in the process of moving to Florida, when Herman shows up on her doorstep and suggests that they should get married. As the movers take out her furniture, piece by piece, they relive old times and he tries to convince her to stay and be his wife.
