When Owen was in college, he took part in underground fighting to pay his way through school. One fight ends badly when he nearly kills his opponent and, swearing to get himself out of that life, becomes an accountant. His training comes in handy one night when he finds his boss eating human flesh in his office. The boss turns out to be a werewolf and Owen manages to defeat it in a one on one fight.

His fight with the werewolf scores him an interview with Monster Hunter International, a private company that collects the bounty on supernatural creatures worldwide. He goes to their base and is trained by Earl Harbinger and his team to kill any number of supernatural beings.

His first mission goes awry almost immediately. Vampires have taken over a cargo ship and have killed the French mercenaries who were attempting to take it back. Owen and his team find out that the boat was carrying an immortal being that plans to destroy the world.

Owen begins having visions, guided by a dead monster hunter who is residing in his head, of The Cursed One and how he became an immortal enemy of the light. The Cursed One was originally a conquistador who found a tribe of ancient warriors. Their priestess Koriniha possessed magic that seduced the conquistador. He is convinced by her to bring back The Old Ones, mystical beings of immense power who live in another dimension. His captain stops the ritual and they are both cursed to wait two thousand years before the rift can be reopened.

Owen and MHI race to stop this entity from destroying their world. They finally find The Cursed One in a pocket dimension with the sorceress Koriniha and his captain. It turns out The Cursed One was not the one destined to bring back the Old Ones, but Owen himself. To coerce Owen into using the power, Koriniha slits the throat of his teammate Julie. Owen chooses to let her die in order to prevent the return of The Old Ones. Moved by his compassion, the Captain uses the last of his power to save her life. The Old Ones are locked away and without their power to sustain him, The Cursed One dies. Owen returns to our world a hero.
Best part of story, including ending: The action scenes in this story are especially well written. The author has a command of each scene and they are crisp and fast-paced. These scenes are the high point of the book and could easily translate to a summer blockbuster.

Best scene in story: My favorite scene would have to be when Owen first encounters the werewolf. He has no training for fighting a werewolf, and only a compact pistol to defend himself with. He shoots the werewolf until he runs out of ammo, but it is to no avail. The resulting scene is full of tension as we see a normal human struggle against the incredibly powerful werewolf. His eventual triumph is like a great weight lifting off of the reader.

Opinion about the main character: Owen Pitt is a character that is presented to us as being incredibly smart. However, throughout the book his only solution to any problem is to shoot it or punch it. We never see any glimpse of this supposed intelligence and the character suffers for it.
