A Moral Dilemma Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of A Moral Dilemma

When Rebecca catches her boyfriend cheating she kicks him out of their flat. Rebecca has suspected that Jeremy, her boyfriend of many years is far from faithfully, and she eventually follows him and gets evidence of his infidelity on film. Her two best friends have opposite opinions on what she should do; Julia who introduced Rebecca to Jeremy thinks she should give him another chance, whereas Abigail is all for kicking him out right away. Rebecca sensibly follows Abigail's advice and kicks Jeremy out.

Rebecca works as a beautician at a high class salon, and always seems to be on the verge of losing her job, in spite of being good at it, mainly due to an exacting and demanding boss. Shortly after kicking Jeremy out Rebecca is sent on a home visit to a very rich new client, Isabella, who appears to be crazy, but takes an inexplicable liking to Rebecca.

Isabella asks Rebecca to help her find out if her husband would cheat on her, and Rebecca agrees, thinking that she would have loved to have known about Jeremy earlier. Isabella buys Rebecca an expensive new wardrobe so that she will appear to be the kind of woman that Isabella's husband, Charles, would be attracted to. Despite Rebecca making a fool of herself the first couple of times she tries to chat up Charles, he inexplicably offers to buy her coffee after witnessing an argument that she has with Jeremy.

Charles and Rebecca go on a series of platonic outings, it turns out that he really is faithful to his wife, and a very nice man, and Rebecca falls for him and feels guilty for what she has been doing so tells Isabella she won't continue, and that her husband is clearly faithful. Isabella begs he to go on one more date, just to make sure, which she does, and ends up kissing Charles.

Isabella's diabolic plan then becomes clear – she wanted to leave Charles but they had a pre-nuptial agreement that stated if either party was unfaithful they would get nothing, including custody of the two children. Isabella had been unfaithful a number of times, but Charles would not as her for a divorce as he insisted on standing by his wedding vows. The only way Isabella could leave him and get the children and his money was to catch him out cheating so she set Rebecca up to tempt him.

The plan doesn't work – Rebecca tells the judge about what has happened, and Isabella gets mad and tells Charles that she paid Rebecca. Charles is hurt and upset by Rebecca's deception, not giving her a chance to explain.

A few weeks later Rebecca bumps into Charles at Ascot, he asks if she would consider dating him for real and she, of course says yes.
Best part of story, including ending: I wasn't keen on any of the characters, they were very inconsistent, with Rebecca claiming not to drink, and drinking all the time, Julia being utterly against infidelity and then inexplicably having an affair. I didn't really identify with any of them.

Best scene in story: I liked the Sunday afternoon scenes at Julia's house, they were well written and I could imagine being there

Opinion about the main character: I liked that Rebecca made the decision to kick Jeremy out and stood by it.
