Mary Sutter is a midwife from New York, during the time of the American Civil War. She has always had the desire to become a surgical doctor, but could never aspire to this goal due to the lack of woman's rights at the time. As the bloody battles commence, the Union desperately seeks for qualified surgeons to assist the wounded. Mary will leave her home in Albany NY, and set off to Washington DC to care for the wounded.

This book in general focus's on Mary's feelings, doubts and her actions. Mary will do her duty and surgically help wounded troops who have been transported to the main Northern hospital in Washington DC. The book shines in showing the reader the crude and rudimentary medical practices of the days of the civil War. We also see the inner beauty of a women who loves her country and will go to any means in helping those who need medical care in a time of war. Mary is strong willed and determined to do her part for the cause.
Best part of story, including ending: This book is extremely detailed. This has pro's and con's. When reading about the medical practices of the American Civil War one gets a very detailed description of how these were done.

Best scene in story: The endurance that Mary face's. One scene after a devastating battle, many soldiers are in need of urgent medical attention. Mary is drenched in blood and sweat doing her best to save lives of both wounded Southern and Northern soldiers.

Opinion about the main character: Her strong will and determination. Mary is set on being a medical surgeon in a time when all is stacked against her.
