Charlotte Nash, an independent woman of the ton, becomes involved in a network of spies set up by the St. Bride Abbey in memory of the death of her father who gave his lives for three operatives. Dand Ross is one of the three "rose hunters" who has pledged to help and protect the Nash sisters in their time of need. Charlotte becomes involved in an intrigue where a letter is stolen of great importance and she must go undercover in order to steal the letter.

Charlotte calls upon Dand to pose as her "lover" so she may ruin her reputation and have the man who has the letter look upon her as a potential mistress, so she may be invited to his home. As Charlotte and Dand involve themselves in the mission that could mean less lives lost at war, they begin to feel the attraction they already feel for one another grow into a great passion.
When Charlotte finally arrives at the castle where the letter is being held, she finds that Dand has preceded her there, determined to protect her as well as retrieve their letter. As their passion turns to love, they find an old enemy coming out of the shadows to reveal himself, a man who has not only haunted them, but Charlotte's sisters and the other Rose hunters as well. Together they fight to overcome the man who has haunted their shadows for years, as well as find a future with each other.
