Major Lucas Winter of the American marines has travelled to London in search of a criminal, to find the couple he is looking for, he must find a discreet way to find information. The woman he is looking for, Dolly, is rumored to have married an Earl, so Lucas decides to put on a faux courtship of the Earl's daughter, Lady Amelia Plume, to discover if her stepmother is the woman he is looking to arrest.

Amelia, who is dared to deliver a letter to her friend's beau's room, accidently enters Lucas's room instead, and discovers that he is investigating her stepmother. When Lucas declares his intention to court her, Amelia sees it for the ploy it is, and decides to put on a serade of her own. Amelia pretends to be a nitwit, hoping her stupid act will allow Lucas to put his guard down so he will reveal information about her stepmother.
As the two put on their act, the discover a deep physical attraction towards each other, which grows even further when they both discover each other's true personality. When Amelia is kidnapped by a rejected beau, Lucas chases to save her, and ends up marrying her to save her reputation.
Even though the couple are deeply in love, the have many obstacles blocking their path to happiness, including Amelia's stepmother and Lucas' own emotional fears.
