No Simple Thing Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of No Simple Thing

Successful, single Kate Van Horn loves her life, her career, and her independence. She has no interest in marriage or children—that is, until she falls for charming architect Alec Callahan. Kate decides to marry Alec, but when his mentally unstable ex-wife Cheryl gets word of it, she goes berserk. In a pivotal scene, a crazed Cheryl shows up at Kate's office along with her young daughter Jessica. Concerned, Kate takes Jessica upstairs to stay with her assistant, but when she returns to the lobby to deal with Cheryl, she's gone. Stung by the audacity of the woman, Kate is left to care for her soon-to-be step-daughter until Alec returns home from a business trip.

Between Kate's demanding career, feelings of insecurity about her new parental role, an unexpected custody battle, and Cheryl's harassment, which goes from bad to worse, Kate is left reeling. Her love for Alec remains constant, but when it becomes apparent that there is no end in sight from the "perils of Cheryl", she wonders if she may have made a mistake.

This is a compelling tale of the choices one woman makes for love and a strong determination to make things work pitted against another woman's choices based on hate and an obsessive desire to get revenge.
