The the two main characters Orry and George meet at West Point military academy and form a strong friendship. Over time their friendships will be tested from their completely different ways of life. Orry a Southern plantation owner and George a Northern industry owner.
The book also entails romance as both Orry and George find love. Orry finds his love while on his way to West Point, and George will find his love during the Mexican American War. Orrys relationship will turn for the worse but his love for Madeline will be forever undying.
The book ends near the beginning of the American Civil War.
Best part of story, including ending: I loved the bond of friendship established between tow complete different familes

Best scene in story: The romance between Orry and Madelene

Opinion about the main character: I liked both Orry's and George's strong loyalty to each other and to their nation.
