After telling a little lie to his new found boss, Jack Maris found himself in search of a fiancee. In a restaurant, the waitress, Tess Donavan, accidentally dropped a bowl of chili in his lap, and agreed to pretend to become his fiancee. They got their story down pat but when it came to meeting the new boss at dinner it was already someone Tess knew growing up in the little town all her life so the original story wasn't going to fly. Instead of owning up to his little lie, Tess helped him to weave a believable tale and they asked and asked the other couple to continue to keep their little secret. However, the boss's wife was known as the town gossip and soon their secret was out and Tess family was upset over never having met Jack. During their make believe engagement the two spent a great deal of time together and on the phone and Tess really fell in love with Jack. She knew he wasn't the marrying type so would take him any way she could get him and worry about her heart later. Jack was going crazy from what Tess's brother-in-law, Brian, saw as "waiting until we are married" but Jack knew this was only a make-believe relationship and cared about Tess and he wasn't going to take her virginity and have her end up regretting it when she did find someone who could love her and give her happily ever after. The break-up had to be in public so when both were at their wits end of being sexually frustrated, Tess called off the wedding AND dumped another bowl of chili in his lap! Both, unknown to each other, were devastated. First Jack's friend Davis talked to Jack and helped him to over come his fear of relationships and Brian set it up so Jack could talk to Tess at a get together at his house without her knowing after Jack confessed to loving her.
