Only in America Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Only in America

Gansevoort, 2001, 249 pp.
ISBN: 0971016801

Louisiana business mogul Titus “Buck” Fourcade reaches the disenchanted American middle class as he runs for president against the two parties, blaming their typical politics for the mess the country is in. Buck leads the polls with the incumbent Democrat President Mitchell close behind and Republican candidate wall Jackson in the rear in this tight race. The election results are inconclusive as the Electoral College fails to determine the winner. The House of Representatives make their decision when four million buckaroos arrive in DC. Buck is the President of the United States.

Citizens like Brookville resident Doug Murphy, normally apathetic like much of middle-America, feel Buck is the only hope for this country as his small town is caught in a negative economic spiral. Hope turns into a four letter word when Fourcade is assassinated. His supporters go berserk rioting and looting. DC struggles with a lack of courage, real greenbacks to pay for the emergency, and poll data to determine what the majority of Americans want because no one has the guts to go against the ratings. Military occupation to quell the Fourcade revolt occurs.

Combine the intriguing elections of 92 (the Perot Factor) and 00 (the Florida factor) and bring forth into the millennium Huey Long, readers receive an idea of what happens in the ONLY IN AMERICA election. The story line is a cautionary tale warning that politics as usual is going to turn this nation into a second hand country with military occupation as its homeland security. Doug is a fabulous individual who represents middle America's everyman.
