Coupled with this resentfulness is his increasingly strained relationship with Liza, who becomes Marina's friend. They cannot talk about their problems as openly as they had done in the past, and they begin to have rows. They have a strange effect on their eldest son Thomas, who starts sleepwalking. Thomas is at a boarding prep school and is always terribly homesick, but he is in awe of Marina when he meets her. Archie feels miserable after the death of his father whilst he was on his honeymoon and blames Marina for his trouble with functioning at work and at home.
After writing a furious letter to Marina, Archie visits Marina one night and starts an affair with her. Meanwhile Liza starts playing up to Blaise's advances and kissing him when she thinks that the headmistress is not watching. Then they have a blazing argument in the school cloakroom which causes Blaise's return to his home in Ireland. Then Liza discovers Archie's affair by accident, which finally tears their world apart. Thomas tries to run away from school, which then helps the parents work together. Instead of divorcing, they move to Scotland to start a new life.
