A year after accepting her new life as an ahalad-kaalslane, a sort of wandering priest or priestess who is telepathically linked with an animal, nothing seems to be going the way Reisil planned. Most destressing, however, is that the Blessed Lady, the Goddess of Reisil's country, seems to have turned her back on the people. Fewer and fewer are hearing the call to become ahalad-kaalslane, new mysterious creatures are attacking people who wander into the mountains, and a deadly plague has stricken the country. Reisil, who was given the ability to heal from the Blessed Lady is horrified to discover that this gift cannot stand against the deadly illness. In addition to this worry, a group of mysterious ambassadors has come to visit the royal family, and Reisil fears that they are working on a hidden agenda.
Reisil begins to believe that the only way to defeat the plague is to seek out the Wizards, but after killing a large number of them the year before, she wonders if the more distructive nature of the Blessed Lady's gift is enough to protect her.
