White covers the major elements of Shelley's life: his expulsion from college for refusing to admit that he wrote a pamphlet about atheism, his marriage to Harriet Taylor and then his abandonment of her when he fell in love with Mary Godwin. He talks about the writing of his major poems, his friendship with Lord Byron, and the couple's life in Italy where they moved after leaving England until the poet's death in a boating accident.
