Simeon Hastings AKA Macheath once worked for Alexa Prescotts father until he was wrongfully accused of theft. He escaped prison and, after losing his hand while a sea captain, now makes his living in any way he can. He overhears enemy who framed him plot to kidnap Alexa. He kidnapps her first to protect her. She sets his coat on fire, but once she learns about plot she helps him. They are being chased by bad guys who want to kill him and force her into marriage. They fall in love even after she discovers his identity, but he doesn't believe he is the man for her.
