When Eve is called on to investigate a dead body, she is stunned to find that the victim is none other than Detective Amaryllis Coltraine, fellow police officer and medical examiner Morris's love interest.

Amelia had recently transferred from Atlanta to New York on her own request. When Eve starts digging, she finds out to her dismay that Amelia had been involved with Alex Ricker, Eve and Roarke's old nemesis Max Ricker's son, in Atlanta. What is even more interesting is that Alex Ricker was in New York at the time of Amelia's murder.
Soon after the murder, Eve receives a parcel at her office in Central containing Amelia's gun, badge and a note warning her that she would be next.
Every instinct tells Eve that Coltraine was killed by someone she knew. Was it a fellow police officer, an informant related to one of her cases or a former lover? Eve has to find the killer and at the same time, find out whether Amelia was secretly on the take and cheating on Morris.
Best part of story, including ending:
This story was especially sad because of the way Amelia's death affects Morris. Morris is a normally cheerful personality, in spite of his work as a medical examiner and a person that Eve understands and respects.
Best scene in story:
The morning after the bridal shower for Louise when all of Eve's friends gather at her house for breakfast was funny and enlightening.
Opinion about the main character:
Eve is extremely loyal to her friends and is capable of doing anything in her power to avoid hurting them. She faces one of the worst moments in her career when she has to tell Morris that Amelia has been killed. Later she enlists Morris's help to catch the killer, knowing that the contribution will help him achieve some peace.
