Jon Sciler, 27, is a Far Warrior, a group of game players and computer whizzes hired to rescue a colony on the planet Dirangesept (they stay in orbit, and control 'autoids' on the surface--hence game players rather than soldiers). When the mission goes awry--through no fault of the Far Warriors--they are blamed by almost all of society upon their return, eighteen Earth years later (the Warriors themselves were in suspended animation). Most of the Far Warriors become mentally unstable; Sciler, who is also a poet, is one of the more stable ones---which makes him perfect for the research of Chrye Roffe, a psychology graduate student studying the Far Warriors. In a world where many have retreated into virtual reality games to avoid the gloom and doom of a planet in exorable decay, Sciler is hired by a company called Maze to test a new game, one that involves magic. But there is more to the game than meets the eye, and some of the testers are dying....
