Patrick gives in to his lust for the beautiful Elise and agrees to defend Bartholomew if Elise becomes his mistress.

Their relationship is passionate and sensual and gradually they fall in love with each other. But Elise is not the wife Patrick wants. She has no aristocratic connections to further his political ambitions and if their affair is discovered, the scandal would ruin Patrick's reputation.
