Sarah still loves Cranwell and finds it painful to see him again. She knows that he thinks she is immoral but she cannot tell him the truth. Sarah had been raped as a teenager by her cousin. Her cousin still threatens her if she tells anyone.

Cranwell wants to shun Sarah but he finds he cannot. He is torn between his former love for her and his knowledge that she was not a virgin when he married her. He wants to know what Sarah is really like and must discover the secret about her past.
