Deaver's latest protagonist is a location scout, who checks out sites for movie sets. John Pellam has discovered the town of Cleary and decides it is perfect for shooting a film called 'To Sleep in a Shallow Grave'.   He hasn't been in town long before he finds someone doesn't want him there. His mobile home is vandalised and his partner is murdered. It seems as if everyone who matters is against him when he is beaten up and drugs are planted on him. The Mayor who is the local magistrate prosecutes him for being drunk and disorderly and the sheriff seems to be in the conspiracy too. Pellam is determined to solve the mystery of his friend's murder and won't leave town till he does.
