Lucia Valenti is the bastard daughter of an Italian monarch and famous European courtesan. She has spent her life in and out of boarding schools and convents because of her penchant for scandals. Sir Ian Moore is England's most proper diplomat, he has been called home to London to arrange a marriage for Lucia. When the pair meet,they are instantly feel attraction, though Ian denies it and provides Lucia with the stipulations with her marriage. The first thing Lucia is forced to due is move away from her scandalous mother, and is forced to live with Ian's brother and his wife.
Lucia's mother tells her to manipulate Ian with her womanly wiles to get what she wants, and Lucia puts that plan into action by constantly flirting with Ian, and soon she realizes that it is Ian she really wants.
Ian realizes that he, too, has fallen in love with Lucia, although he does not meet the criteria that Lucia's father has set for her choice of husband. As her ball in her honor has been thrown, in which at the end she is to pick one of her acceptable suitors, she instead ends up having a torrid bout of passion with Ian. The two are caught in the act and forced to marry, but each has misgivings as to the other's feelings which they have to get past in order to find happiness.
