Silent Lies is the story of a young Hungarian named Leo who has an amazing talent for languages. He is offered the opportunity to study in Budapest, and his future looks bright until Hungary's collapse after World War I. Leo then travels through Europe, holding various jobs and constantly reinventing his identity. While in Paris, Leo meets and falls in love with the beautiful Martha. Shortly after, his talent for languages causes him to become caught up in an elaborate counterfeit scheme.

When this counterfeit scheme results in Leo murdering a man, he is forced to leave Paris, and Martha, behind. He flees to Shangai, bringing with him a stolen diamond necklace that helps him to build his fortune. He then brings Martha to Shanghai to marry him. When the head of the Chinese mafia discovers Leo's true identity and blackmails him, Leo must find a way to protect his family and his secret.
