When Shade, a young Silverwing bat, angers the owls living in his forest by attempting to see the sun -- an object owls have coveted for many generations -- he accidentally triggers a war between bats and owls that results in the destruction of his colony's roost. As the surviving Silverwings flee to their winter roost, a violent storm separates Shade from his family and blows him to a deserted island. There, he meets Marina, a beautiful Brightwing bat, who helps Shade search for his lost family.
Thanks to a mental sonic map Shade's mother left him, Shade and Marina soon learn the way to the Silverwings' new roost. But when Shade and Marina encounter a pair of malevolent vampire bats who want Shade to lead them to his colony so they can devour the Silverwings, Shade must summon the courage and strength to save his people from total annihilation.
