Sleepwalker Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Sleepwalker

When police officer Micayla Lange agreed to house-sit for a family friend, she had no idea that the man who was robbing the house could make her change her beliefs about right and wrong, but she is forced to run with the criminal to stay alive and seek justice. At only 11 years of age, Micayla Lange learned how to recognize the sound of gunfire. Forced to work nights to pay for their modest apartment in a dangerous section of Detroit, her mom left Micayla to be watched at night by her 16 year old sister, Jenny. One night, Jenny and her friend snuck out late at night and Micayla tagged along.

The cold night and teenage boys who were giving chase to the three girls were not nearly as scary as the image of an older man in the dark, watching the girls run home. Just as they get to the apartment complex, they discover that their mother has arrived home early. The illusion of safety that she presents is compromised by the shot that their mother, Wendy, receives to the head and her quick death.

That is not the type of event that anyone would ever forget very easily, but Micayla does her best to get past it. 16 years later, she is a police officer in great physical condition and is an excellent shot. Her lasting reminder of the childhood trauma that she and her sister survived is the occasional sleepwalking she experiences, a few times a year.

Unfortunately, the newest occurrence happened at her honorary uncle's house, where she arrived early to house-sit after her romantic relationship with a fellow police officer ended unexpectedly. The beautiful, expensive home was guarded by experts, so there should have been no problem…but she wakes in time to find Jason Davis robbing her beloved, honorary uncle's home.

The fact that the property owner himself was believed to be a gangster did not mean that his home should be robbed, but it did explain his wealth and the amount of security on his property.   The million and a half dollars in cash that Jason and his partner, John (also known as Jelly) were stealing was adequate motivation to break into even a heavily guarded home when nobody was supposed to be there.

After a scuffle showcasing her martial arts training, law enforcement skills and a solid attempt to convince her that Jason and John (also known as Jelly) had the right to be there, she is subdued by their sheer strength and superior numbers. Unfortunately, what they thought was just money in the suitcases also included photographs proving that dear Uncle Nicco was a mobster. That evidence was worth dying for…at least according to Nicco, who could not continue with business when an upright, law-abiding police officer knew what he did.

She is kidnapped by the two men and their silent partner, Tina, who provided additional support to their projects from the van parked outside. Obviously, mobsters do not take well to being robbed of their own evidence at their own home, especially when it looks like a family friend assisted.

Therefore, they are chased on water, using boats and over miles of rugged terrain on snowmobile. Micayla (also known as Mick) has to reconcile that she is a police officer helping a crook, being chased by bad guys that were like family until recently…and that she feels an almost unbearable attraction to the same crook she has no choice but to help.

After another nightmare about her mother's murder, she draws closer to Jason as she tells him what happened. Many of her nightmares and sleepwalking episodes have caused a violent reaction and when it happens again as they are hiding out, they kiss and almost make love. The only reason they didn't was because Nicco's employees were once again too close for comfort.

After setting a trip for Nicco's men, Mick and Jason are able to determine that there are at least ten other groups of people in the area searching for them, with a heavy price on their heads. They are wanted dead or alive, and Nicco might not enjoy being responsible for Mick's death, but it could be a cost of doing business. They are finally caught by the other man in the incriminating photographs and manage to escape. Although both Jason and Micayla act on their sexual attraction, they do not actually trust one another yet…it is more that working together is better than working alone.

After outsmarting, outfighting and outmaneuvering a series of bad guys intent on reclaiming the photographs and eliminating the evidence, they escape on a tiny plane that Jason accesses to his home in the Cayman Islands. Once they arrive, Tina and “Jelly” are re-introduced, with Tina accepting her because she is “with” Jason and Jelly being suspicious of any honest cop.

While in the Caymans, Jason and Mick are finally able to act on their attraction, with a very erotically charged few pages. It also becomes obvious that at one point, Jason and his friends were reasonably honest individuals and they became dishonest only after a very unfortunate and illegal experience with the FBI many years ago.

Best part of story, including ending: The story was never what you thought would happen. So many novels of this type seem to not change and this was so far from being formula. Well-written, suspenseful and fast-paced, it's exactly an action novel should be, with enough erotic undertones to keep you guessing.

Best scene in story: The scene where they first become intimate is excellent. It was unique because although there was sexual tension throughout the entire book between the two, it did not happen until close to the end of the book. When it did, it did not move out of character as is common in many novels and it did not occur as the result of or leading to immediate devotions of love. Instead, it was a fast-paced, visceral event that was not sleazy and that is not common to read. Very, very sexual wording, actions and descriptions of body parts, girth, smells, etc.

Opinion about the main character: The character of Mick Lange was brilliantly written because her character development was so well explained. Her control issues, her sleepwalking and insomnia, and even her pride in being a good cop can be traced back to the horrific events of her mother's murder. Therefore, she is someone I would want to know, with an acceptable amount of emotional baggage and she is brilliant.
