Her boyfriend is in jail for seeing an underage girl and that leaves Nikai Parker so humiliated she cannot go to the mailbox, let alone work or talk with her family and friends. However, she feels perhaps the worst depression of her life not just because Travis is a no good brotha, but because she had their unborn aborted without any personal support three days ago. Her next door neighbor Sheila persuades Nikai that the humiliation is Travis' not hers and she needs a night on the town hitting the clubs. Reluctantly, Nikai agrees to an evening of clubbing expecting very little from the male crumbs she expects to meet.

To her shock, Nikai meets firefighter Robert Hayes, who is more than just handsome as he is the complete package of the caring hunk. They begin to see each other and fall in love leading Nikai to dream of a lifetime with the person she believes is her kindred soul mate. However, Robert is also seeing another woman who has plans for him that rival that of Nikai.

SOMEONE TO CATCH MY DRIFT is an engaging African-American relationship drama starring wonderfully complex lead characters. The story line is humorous yet angst-laden as Nikai struggles between her feelings and what Robert wants in their relationship. The metamorphosis of Nikai makes the novel hum when she has a catharsis that she must look within before looking without and concludes that her internal perspective of herself is painful. Jacqueline Powell's debut tale is a delightful novel that readers will enjoy for its clever and insightful look at everyday people.
