Halley and her mom had always been close, but that began to change. Her mom sent her to a summer camp, but Halley comes home when she learns her best friend, Scarlett, has lost her boyfriend in a motorcyle accident. Halley comforts her, but after school begins they get bad news. Although they only had sex once, Scarlett got pregnant, and the father died the next day.

Halley becomes involved with Macon, a rich bad boy who is everything her parents don't want for her. Together Macon and Halley help Scarlett get out of getting an abortion, and together they wade through Scarlett's pregnancy.

When Macon starts pushing her for sex and Halley refuses, things get sticky. After a fight Macon is driving too fast and there is an accident. Halley is almost killed, and after that she doesn't speak to Macon. Months go by and Scarlett is now good friends with Cameron, a nerdy boy who happens to have a very good heart. On the night of prom, Scarlett goes into labor, and the entire high school comes to the hospital. Halley realizes this was what growing up is all about.
