Paul Morrell is a young boy growing up in England as it enters the Industrial Revolution. His father is a miner, but his mother comes from a more prestigious background, and aspires for something better for her son. The book is centered on Paul and his mothers relationship which is borderline incestuous. Paul struggles to avoid his lust for momma and never manages to rightly achieve this. Thus his life and his relationships with other women, (all of who his mother hates) are deeply affected.
