Lauren knows that there must be some plot behind Kit's attention to her, and she discovers the wager. She proposes a false engagement to him instead, so she can get away from her overprotective family members and set up a spinster's residence and he can find a bride he truly wants.
Kit and Lauren never suspect that their false engagement might be something they both want to make real, but both have insecurities that keep them at distance from each other. Kit's is held back by his fallout with his family, and Lauren's jilted marriage and lack of true parents hold both of them back from showing their true feelings.
