Ten years later, Evelyn once again encounters Martin, only now he is a Cowes sailing champion and she has come to the sailing tournament in hopes of finding a new husband since she has been widowed many years. Believing Martin is still a womanizer, Evelyn treats him with disdain from the first.
Martin comes to Cowes to win a tournament, but is immediately distracted by Evelyn, whom has always challenged and intrigued him. As he sets to win the race at the end of the week, he can't help but set about seducing her, and to his surprise Evelyn agrees to an short term affair with no attachments.
As the two make passionate love night after night, both begin to feel love for one another, only Evelyn believes it is one-sided. Martin finally indulges to her that he is afraid of any emotional commitment due to the death of a wife and child years before. Together, they must fight Martin's fears and Evelyn's low self esteem before they can find the right track to love and marriage.
