He becomes Brandon, the brother of a man married to an Indian woman named Zylle. The towns people accuse her of being a witch and are about to hang her, when Brandon and Charles chant the rune and save her. Then he becomes Chuck or Mrs. O'Keefe's brother, and found out about their mom and her marriage to a second husband and how he gave Chuck an extreme head injury. Next it was Mathew that Charles Wallence went into, a crippled young man who lived with his family and the family of his good friend, Zillah. His twin, Brandon, came back from battle with no hope, but Mathew encouraged him. He decided to go help settle land in Vespugia, the same place Mad Dog came from, and wishes to take Zillah with him as his wife. Back at the house, Meg learns about why Mad Dog is the way Mad Dog is, because his mother was bitter and raised him to try to destroy the world because she was bitter because of her past. His mothers name was Zillah. Charles knows what he must do, send Zillah to Bran, but Zillah's father will not allow it.
