In Redwall Abbey a baby otter is born. He is taken to a river for a otter ceremony by his father. The father is killed by Sawney Rath, a wicked ferret, whose seer told him that the baby is the Taggerung, a special member of the vermin tribes.

Back at the Abbey the mother otter and her daughter try to find out what happened to the father and Denna, the baby.
Fifteen years later Denna, newly named Tagg, gets into a fight with Sawney and journeys back to Redwall.
