Bridget Cooke is poor, 25 years old with a scar on her otherwise lovely face. In Regency England, she is considered unmarriageable. Ewen, Viscount Sinclair, is handsome, rich with a reputation as a rake. When he offers to make Bridget his mistress, she turns him down. Unbelievably, he begins to court her instead. But when Bridget tells her aunt about his marriage proposal, she is thrown out of the house. Ewen and Bridget hastily marry and he takes her to his country house.

For two weeks, Ewen is loving and passionate, but then he is called away on mysterious business for the Prince Regent. Bridget is left alone with servants who seem to think she is just another one of his mistresses and none of Ewen's friends believe he is married. She wonders if they were really married or is he really a cad who deceived her just to get her into his bed.
