The Christmas Candle Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Christmas Candle

In the story, you meet a young preacher named David, who due to a family tragedy has become a skeptic concerning miracles, and God. As a result he has lost his faith, and has become rather cynical. As the story begins, he is helping in London with the Salvation Army, feeding the poor. He is approached by a wealthy woman, who has previously written him to come to her town and take over the pastorate there. He initially refuses, but then decides to go, upon her prodding, and needing a change of pace. He also encounters a young woman named Abigail, who has been kicked out of her residence, because she is with child, and the baby's father is responsible for it. When he arrives in town, he learns of an incredible story, about a candle maker who loves the Lord very much, who just before Christmas is on his knees praying for God to use him in some small way with his business. That night, the candle maker is awakened to an angel of the Lord appearing in his home and business. This angel gently going through all the candles made by this godly man, and proceeds to touch ONE candle. Upon witnessing this, decides to pass this candle on to the most needy person in the town, (a destitute brother and sister), tells them that when they light the candle, pray, and trust God to supply. The end result is that the following day, the siblings are told they are related to a very wealthy person in the town, and have inherited a vast fortune and a new home! Every 25 years, God, through the candle, blesses and meets needs of individuals that can only be considered a miracle. During this time, he learns that this is the 25th year of this event, and they all expect God to send his angel again to bless a candle. Initially, David does not believe this, and thinks this is fantasy. He tries to explain away it all, but no one will be deterred. While there, he meets a very lovely young woman named Emily, who has NO faith, and it is also because of family tragedies. She too is skeptical of the candle, but through the hand of God, David regains his faith, and she discovers hers. Not only are they affected by this, but different people through the town are also affected, in ways no one could imagine. The Candle Makers, who have a prodigal son, discover they have a grandson, in Abigail who is found in a snow storm through the miracle of the God given candle.
