The chosen land is the property of the Ponder family, a reclusive mountain clan, which is well known for shooting at anyone setting foot on their property. The family matriarch, Queen Ponder, is in failing health and is willing to sell in order to provide for and protect an abused and severely retarded family member. Unfortunately, Queen's violence-prone brothers don't trust her, or anyone else. The brothers engage in a campaign of threats, vandalism, and intimidation to make sure they receive the money.

Canty courageously stands up to the brothers and persuades Guilford Golf Designs not to withdraw from the deal. She uses her tenuous relationship to Queen, and the help of her long time friend and former love interest, Sheriff Tully Jones, to keep the threats and intimidation from escalating. As Canty rushes to make final preparations for closing the deal, the brothers beat Queen and wound Burke. Although both are hurt, all parties meet in the local lawyer's conference room for a tension filled closing.
