Carsten Peter Thiede is an expert in the history, religous themes, politics, humna nature, and the ancient documents of the Essenes in the first century AD. His range is as impressive as his ability to integrate what he knows and has to say. His particular talent is to combine these together and create a conceptually coherent and informationally rich overview. Some of his conclusions are controversial, some support the most orthodox of positions. He concludes that part of Mark's gospel and Paul first epistle to Timothy are to be found amongst the cave 7 Greek papyri. His analytical powers are exceptional, but he manages to present this book well for the general intelligent reader.

The only area where I felt in any way superior to his exceptional level of knowledge and expertise was in his presentation of the new technical forensic techniques available to re-assess these documents and artifacts. It was a relief to not feel totally inferior!
