Once again Lucy Stone finds herself juggling her responsibilities as a mom, journalist and amateur detective. Lucy and her boss Tom travel to Boston for a week to attend a newspaper conference. Lucy is worried about leaving her family just one week before Father's Day. While at the conference Luther Read, head of the Pioneer Press newspaper dynasty dies from what appears to be an asthma attack. Luther was planning to sell Pioneer Press but Lucy overhears the family arguing about the sale just prior to his death. Later his son Junior is arrested when the police suspect foul play.

Lucy finds herself investigating the case while attending conference workshops, sightseeing and worrying about her family. She believes Junior, a seasonal resident of Tinker's Cove and employer of her oldest daughter, is innocent. She becomes casual friends with Junior's sister Caroline in an attempt to get more information about the family. Lucy isn't the only journalist eager to break a big story. She finds herself in danger after another female reporter working on the story turns up dead soon after Lucy tells her everything she has been able to uncover.
