The Gravity Between Us Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Gravity Between Us

An uncertain/confused lesbian actress falls for her childhood best friend, a musician. Kendall is a famous Hollywood actress who is recognized at every corner for her blockbuster star roles, and although the swarming fans are pesky and irritating, they're the least of her problems. Kendall has an image to maintain (as her manager consistently reminds her), everyone across the nation looks up to her as a role model, but the only person she cares about is her childhood friend, Payton. Payton is an aspiring musician hoping to be the next Hans Zimmerman, and when Kendall offers her a chance at a scholarship to the college of her dreams located in California, she instantly accepts. The two of them have known each other for all of their lives. However, Payton has always thought of Kendall in a more-than-friend kind of way and, unknown to both of them, so has Kendall.

The actress is starring in an upcoming film containing a lesbian couple. When filming a rather intimate scene, she imagines Payton as the romantic interest instead of her co-worker. In that moment she realizes she is extremely attracted to her friend. Later, she meets a woman co-starring in the next film she'll be starring in who is an open lesbian actress. This opens her up a little to the idea of coming out, but she is still very against the idea. Kendall has a strong belief that if she comes out as a homosexual, it will ruin her career.

Kendall must hide her surging attraction towards Payton, as she believes Payton would never return her feelings. Ironically, Payton thinks the same idea. Payton is an athletic, charming, irresistible woman who is a little above average in height. Her attractive demeanor attracts a lot of attention from other celebrities in California, much to her surprise. Kendall's new lesbian friend takes Payton out, and they date for a while. Then Kendall finally confesses her feelings to Payton, and Payton obviously returns them. Then they have sex. Afterwards, they face the "actress becoming lesbian overnight" problem.

In the end, unsurprisingly, Kendall comes out as being gay. She gave a speech when receiving her award for "Best Actress in a Leading Role" illustrating her love toward Payton for giving her will power to succeed in her career. The epilogue shows Kendall, Payton, and Kendall's lesbian friend happily acting and producing music for Kendall's next blockbuster.
Best part of story, including ending: It was alright. I think the plot was a little cliche and it was painfully obvious the author was trying to be original. The author wasn't a very good writer to begin with. There were times where I almost fell asleep because their writing was so boring. But it also had its fair share of cuddly/sexual romance, which is always a plus. I'd give it a 6/10.

Best scene in story: The erotic scene was pretty nicely done. I'd rather not give too many details, but it was crafted well.

Opinion about the main character: I didn't really like Kendall or Payton that much. They seemed kind of bland, boring, black and white. The author could have added more depth to them than just angsty coming-out homosexual stuff.
