When Diana dies, Tessa has no choice but to get a job. She becomes a companion to a man's daughter in the country. When her employer tries to rape her, Tessa runs away. That's when Tessa decides to go to Glamara and face her grandfather, the man who disowned his once beloved daughter.

When Tessa arrives at Glamara, she is shocked and relieved to find that her grandfather died a few days ago. The family welcomes her, and Tessa begins a new life. She is reunited with her childhood sweetheart, Alec, and they become engaged. Tessa thinks that she is in love with Alec, until she meets Julian, a tall, dark and handsome man. When Julian's ward, Roxanne, discovers that he has feelings for Tessa, Roxanne inflicts revenge and heartache into Tessa's life by stealing Alec away from her. (Roxanne is the same age as Tessa and is obsessed over Julian.) Roxanne tells Tessa that according to a gypsy prediction, Tessa would hurt her and steal from her what was rightfully her own. Roxanne is determined that she will have the upper hand over Tessa and will make her pay for wanting Julian.
