Michael Foot's biography of HG Wells reveals the man and his life in all of its many facets. Herbert George (HG) Wells, was born in poverty in Kent, England in 1866 becomes one of Britain's most prolific writers. His difficult early life gave him a respect for the rights of all individuals not only those born into the privileged classes. Initially a science teacher, Wells writes some of the classic works of modern science fiction including The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The First Men in the Moon, and The Island of Dr. Moreau.

A strong believer in science and it's ability to change the human condition, Wells became an atheist and a socialist. He was at the top of Britain's literary circle along with James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, and George Bernard Shaw as the twentieth century dawned. Much of Wells writing from 1900 until his death in 1946 reflected his socialist political stance and world view. He met Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt and was a personal friend of Winston Churchill.
Well's love life was scandalous to say the least. Twice married, he carried on numerous love affairs and fathered multiple children out of wedlock although he acknowledged and loved them all. Wells lived to be almost 80 years old. Michael Foot knew Mr. Wells and has done an excellent job of capturing the character and essence of the man.
