Matt is the owner of the Emerald Hotel where Anna works, so not only is he a friend but her boss as well. The hotel is losing money badly and Anna helps Matt in finding out the reason for the hotel's failure.

During all this, Matt is in love with Anna and finally declares his love. When Anna cannot return his love, Matt, who was already on the edge of depression, goes over the edge. Feeling guilty about not being able to love Matt like he wants her to, Anna makes it her life's mission to find somebody who can love Matt unconditionally.

When she finds an old journal that belonged to Matt's father, Tom, who was lost at sea four years ago, she decides that finding Tom is the answer to restoring her friend's happiness. So she embarks on a journey to find Tom. Thus begins a thrilling adventure which finally culminates in Anna finding not only Tom but love as well.
Best scene in story: The scene where a drunk Matt declares his love. I feel like this scene set the stage for the rest of the story.

Opinion about the main character: I thought it was a little cliched for Anna to think that finding and bringing back Matt's father was the ultimate solution.
