Lazarus is a shy gardener working for the Budoin Household, who is unaware of why he has the ability to control and manipulate plant growth. His mother, Roslyn seeking to gain control of the Tianamain House, murdered his brother, his father and himself, but he was recovered by a gypsy woman who found his body and replaced the heart which had been removed with a flower and thus, he aquired these powers.

It is in the gardent that he meets Ivy, a lady-in-waiting at Budoin, who is engaged to marry the haughty and empty-headed Ambassador Rafael. The two devise a plan to kidnap Rafael and take him to Lazarus' mother, who will cast a spell to turn his heart. The plan fails, however, and Rafael is blinded.
The two take the wounded Ambassador to Ja'suun, Lazarus' hometown, only to uncover Lazarus' past. Lazarus decides to confront his mothrr, who still rules the House at Tianamian, and Ivy agrees to come with him. After coercion, Rafael agrees to go as well.
The trio set off to Bridge with the intent of alerting to House Counsil of Mistress Roslyn's deceitful doings. Lazarus learns to control his powers, while Ivy and Rafael square off and finally realize that the best man for her is, in fact, Lazarus.
